Privacy Policy
Effective October 3, 2026
Kitab is a local-first reader. You can read without an account. Optional Kitab Pro sync stores the data you choose to sync in your private Google Drive application-data folder. Kitab contains no ads. Release versions use Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to understand feature usage and diagnose crashes, as described below.
Information Kitab handles
Kitab handles the following content and settings to provide its reading features:
- Books, PDFs, comics, and images that you choose to open or import
- Publication metadata and generated cover images
- Reading position, progress, bookmarks, highlights, and excerpts connected to highlights
- Reading preferences such as theme, typography, layout, and brightness
This information is stored in Kitab's private app storage on your device. If you enable Google Drive sync, Kitab also stores your Google account email address and account identifier locally to identify the connected account. Kitab does not request access to your precise location or contacts and does not collect the Android advertising identifier or payment-card details. Usage and diagnostic data collected in release versions is described below.
How information is used
Your imported content and reading data are used only to open publications, display your library, restore your position, and provide the reading features you choose to use. Kitab does not sell personal information or use it for advertising. If you enable sync, the selected data is transmitted directly to Google Drive to provide that feature; it is not sent to a developer-operated server.
Usage analytics helps the developer understand which features are used and where actions fail. Crash reports help identify and fix reliability problems.
Network access and third parties
Local reading works offline. Kitab uses internet access for optional Google Drive sync, online read-aloud, Google Play services, and Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics in release versions. Kitab has no developer-operated storage server or advertising service. Google processes account, Drive, purchase, analytics, and diagnostic information through its services. See Google's Privacy Policy and Firebase's privacy and security information.
Android and the store from which you installed Kitab may independently process information needed to distribute the app, provide operating-system features, or report platform diagnostics. That activity is controlled by those providers and their privacy policies, not by Kitab.
Usage analytics and crash reports
Release versions of Kitab include Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics. Collection is enabled automatically, including when you read without connecting a Google account. Debug builds do not include either SDK. The current release configuration does not provide an in-app switch to disable this collection.
- Feature usage: Kitab records import format and outcome, publication format when a book opens, selected theme/font/reading-mode categories, whether a bookmark or highlight was added, whether a search found results, and whether read-aloud started with Edge or Android TTS.
- Automatic analytics: Firebase also collects standard app events and session information, such as first launch, app activity, and supported in-app purchase events; app and device information; an app-instance identifier; and approximate geographic information. Kitab disables advertising-ID collection and advertising-personalization signals.
- Crash diagnostics: Crashlytics collects crash stack traces, relevant app state, device and operating-system information, installation and session identifiers, and diagnostic information. Analytics events may appear as breadcrumbs showing actions before a crash.
Kitab's custom analytics events contain categorical values. They do not include book titles, authors, book IDs, file paths, reading positions, selected text, search queries, voice identifiers, or Google account identifiers. Kitab does not attach your Google account identity to analytics or crash reports. Crash reports contain technical exception information and are separate from these custom event payloads.
This data is transmitted to Google, and the developer can view analytics and crash reports through Google's consoles to improve Kitab. It is not used by Kitab for advertising. Google may process data on infrastructure outside your country. For further details, see Google Analytics data collection and Firebase Android data disclosures.
Optional Google Drive sync
When you connect Google Drive, Kitab requests openid and email to identify your account, and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.appdata to create, read, update, and delete Kitab data in the private application-data folder. Kitab cannot browse unrelated Drive files.
You choose which categories to sync: books, reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, library metadata, and reader settings. Sync records also include timestamps and an app-generated device identifier to coordinate changes between devices. The data is used only for sync, backup, and restoration.
Google authorization access tokens are used for requests and are not persisted by Kitab. Your Google password is handled by Google. Google user data is not used for advertising, sold, or used to train AI models.
Kitab's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Disconnecting and deleting cloud data
Disconnect Google Drive in Kitab's Sync & Backup settings to stop sync and request revocation of access. You can also revoke access through your Google account's third-party connections. Disconnecting or uninstalling Kitab does not itself delete the existing cloud backup. To delete stored cloud data, use Google Drive's Settings > Manage apps and delete Kitab's hidden app data. Local copies remain subject to the device controls described below.
Kitab Pro purchases
Google Play handles Kitab Pro purchases. Kitab checks purchase status and acknowledges purchases through Google Play Billing to unlock Pro features. Kitab does not receive payment-card details. Google Play controls payment processing and purchase records.
Read-aloud and speech providers
When you start EPUB read-aloud with an Edge online voice, Kitab sends the current utterance and up to three upcoming sentences to Microsoft's speech service to generate audio. The request includes the selected voice and speech settings. Microsoft also receives the network information needed to handle the request, such as your IP address. This service is governed by Microsoft's privacy statement.
Preloaded speech audio is held for the reading session. You can choose an Android TTS voice in speech settings instead. Android speech processing depends on the selected engine and voice; offline voices can speak without sending text to the Edge service. Network or playback failures fall back to Android TTS.
Document access
Kitab uses Android's system document picker or an “Open with” action to access only files you select. A selected publication is copied into the app's private storage so it remains available on your shelf. Kitab does not request broad access to all files on your device.
Backups and retention
Depending on your device and Android backup settings, the operating system may include Kitab's local app data in a device or cloud backup associated with your device account. Kitab's developer does not operate or receive those backups.
Your data remains on your device until you remove a publication, clear Kitab's storage, or uninstall the app, subject to any backups managed by your operating system. Removing a publication also removes its locally stored reading position and annotations from Kitab.
Analytics and crash information already transmitted to Google is retained separately from your local library, under the applicable service retention settings and policies. Deleting a book, disconnecting Drive, or uninstalling Kitab does not automatically erase those reports. Contact the developer using the address below for privacy or deletion requests; available deletion actions depend on the service and whether the relevant installation data can be identified.
Children's privacy
Kitab contains no ads and does not use collected data to create advertising profiles. The data practices described in this policy, including automatic analytics and crash reporting in release versions, also apply when the app is used by children. Optional Google Drive sync processes the connected account information and selected reading data described above.
Security
Imported publications and reading data are kept in Android's private app storage. No method of electronic storage can be guaranteed absolutely secure, so you should also protect access to your device and device backups.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated if Kitab's features or data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will be revised when an update is published.
